CORONAVIRUS STAND-DOWN

PLEASE NOTE all TYO rehearsals are cancelled until at least 2 May 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

On 16 March 2020, Tasmanian Youth Orchestra made the difficult decision to cancel all face-to-face TYO activity until at least 2 May, in line with medical and government advice around COVID-19/coronavirus. All rehearsals for ensembles and chorales are cancelled and it is unlikely our planned program 1 concerts will proceed.

We are so sad to have had to make this call – but we believe it is the only possible decision under the circumstances. TYO wishes to fully support social distancing measures, as we understand that doing so will help to protect the vulnerable in our community – and will also hopefully reduce the impact on health care workers and our hospitals. We take heart and hope from music – which is a tonic in the trickiest of times – and wish our wider TYO family all the very best in coming weeks. Please note the TYO office is also closed but you can still contact TYO staff.

Tasmanian Youth Orchestra (or ‘TYO’) delivers classical music education, development and performance programs to young Tasmanian musicians and singers aged five to 25. Our vision is to inspire, nurture and develop young Tasmanians to perform to their very best and enjoy a lifelong love of music.

For the love of music

Founded in 1965, the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra is one of the oldest state youth orchestras in Australia. TYO connects young Tasmanians to some of the best musicians in Australia and seeks to deliver a program of outstanding benefit. We provide pathways to professional careers, grow lifetime musicians and supporters of the arts; and encourage inspirational development and leadership journeys among the TYO family.

TYO's program provides musical pathways for a wide range of participants – from those new to ensemble music, through to accomplished youth musicians who are already experienced performers. Our core ensembles have a range of entry points and include two symphony orchestras, a training string group, wind ensemble, percussion ensemble and two chorales. In 2020, TYO will be increasing its connections with young musicians statewise through additional scholarships and workshops, as well as providing extension opportunities to senior TYO players through professionally-led chamber programs.
